My rating: 4 of 5 stars
After putting it down for a few days, I finally had time to finish UnWholly, the 2nd in Shusterman’s trilogy about Connor, Risa and Lev – three teens navigating their way thru the leftover chaos from the 2nd Civil War.
The story is still smart and as intense as the first installment, and the new characters introduced here – Cam, Starkey and even Nelsson – provide even more depth and layers into the story. Shusterman’s characters weigh in on some heavy ethical viewpoints and I’m excited that this book was written for young adults – and hopefully gets them thinking about what can happen when compromise isn’t successful and rigidity and intolerance take over.
Our original trio of characters become more fully developed, and our new characters create enough conflict to keep us on the edge of our seats. I was renewed to remember that young people can fight for what’s right and make a significant change with the sheer force of their beliefs and determination.
The book itself is cleverly structured. The “news reports” and “studies” with url’s that preceed some chapters are witty little extras that shows Shusterman’s true care for his story.
I have to admit, when I found out that there was a short story for sale, that tells what happens to one of the main character’s between the first and second book – I ran out and got it…Unstrung – get it if you haven’t!
Since Unwind was published in 2007 and UnWholly in 2012, that would have been a long five years to wait, so I guess I’m lucky I just found them now. The last installment, Unsouled is scheduled for a Fall 2013 release…all I have to say is HURRY!
